The term ‘engineering’ covers many fields and, by extension, a wide range of skillsets. Today, there are six major branches of engineering: chemical, mechanical, civil, electrical, management, and geotechnical. Within each branch exists hundreds of subcategories. An engineer may be required to apply technical skills in mathematics and science (biology, chemistry, physics), or draw on people skills such as social, culture and economic awareness, creativity, or teamwork to solve problems. From designing buildings, tunnels and airports, to overseeing maintenance on offshore oil platforms, to helping electrify a railway line, opportunities abound for engineers.
