Introduction

Brunel has partnered with a global autonomous systems company deploying real-world autonomy across mining, automotive and logistics, on a permanent opportunity for Hardware Integration Engineer. This is a site-based role, working hands-on with autonomous vehicle systems from build-out through to live deployment. The role operates on an 8/6 roster in New South Wales, open to candidates based in NSW or Queensland.

What are you going to do

Seeking a Hardware Integration Engineer to work on customer sites, supporting the build-out, testing and maintenance of an autonomous vehicle fleet. You will act as the on-site technical lead, working closely with hardware engineers, technicians and operators to ensure systems perform reliably. This role requires hands-on involvement across all aspects of the self-driving system in a live environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert across all aspects of the autonomous vehicle system
  • Support vehicle integration by designing, prototyping and installing sensors and proof-of-concept systems
  • Lead vehicle build-out through to delivery, including final bring-up and shakedown testing
  • Design and build test benches across mechanical, electrical, embedded and software systems
  • Own and maintain documentation related to vehicle integration
  • Troubleshoot vehicle systems, components and sensors, driving root cause analysis
  • Minimise vehicle downtime while prioritising safety
  • Work independently across evolving technical challenges in a live environment

Essential skills and knowledge 

  • Background in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics or robotics engineering
  • Experience working with vehicles, robotics systems or heavy equipment
  • Hands-on experience integrating and testing hardware systems
  • Strong background in hardware integration, testing or system build-out
  • Experience working with sensors such as lidar, radar or cameras
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex system issues in real environments
  • Comfortable working on site in a fast-moving, evolving environment

Nice to have:

  • Exposure to mining industry and equipment
  • Experience with electrical schematics and datasheets
  • Familiarity with Linux, Python or ROS
  • Experience with microcontrollers or embedded systems
  • Experience using shop tools, diagnostics or fabrication equipment
  • Exposure to CAD or SolidWorks
