Introduction

Brunel has partnered with a leading resources company on a contract opportunity for a Cloud Engineer. This role is ideal for someone with IoT exposure, including MQTT telemetry, device security, and production-grade observability for safety-critical systems.

What are you going to do

This role will design and deliver cloud and edge-to-cloud capabilities that enable safe, reliable, and observable operation of a Collision Avoidance System across heavy mobile equipment. You'll build and operate telemetry ingestion, device messaging, APIs, data stores, and dashboards, partnering closely with embedded, systems/safety, and product teams. A key focus is modernising and hardening the road-side-to-cloud path over LTE/4G (MQTT) while maintaining backwards compatibility as hardware evolves.

Key Outcomes:

  • Reliable, low-latency ingestion from road-side components over LTE/4G with MQTT QoS tuned for safety and bandwidth efficiency.
  • Production-grade APIs and data models used by analytics, simulation, incident review, and safety case stakeholders.
  • End-to-end observability: metrics, traces, structured logs, fleet health dashboards, and alerting aligned to clear SLOs.
  • Secure device identity, provisioning, and lifecycle management with audit trails and least-privilege access (IEC 62443 aligned).
  • Data quality and retention that supports safety analysis, regression studies, and regulatory evidence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build cloud-native services for telemetry ingestion, device messaging, and command pathways using MQTT plus REST/gRPC where appropriate.
  • Engineer streaming and batch pipelines for logs, metrics, and events to support diagnostics, fleet analytics, and product insights.
  • Define and maintain message schemas and contracts across onboard, road-side, and cloud boundaries, ensuring backward compatibility.
  • Design scalable storage layers (time-series, object, relational) with partitioning, indexing, and lifecycle policies for cost-efficient retention.
  • Establish and operate observability standards including centralised logging, distributed tracing, SLOs/SLIs, and on-call readiness.
  • Implement secure device onboarding, certificate/key rotation, secrets management, and RBAC for internal services and dashboards.
  • Work with embedded and systems/safety engineers to translate safety requirements into cloud-side validations and fail-safe behaviours.
  • Produce strong technical documentation: interface specs, sequence diagrams, runbooks, data dictionaries, and operational playbooks.
  • Improve CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and automated testing (contract, integration, performance, chaos) to support safe releases.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • 3+ years building cloud platforms for IoT/edge systems, with strong ownership of reliability and operations.
  • Strong MQTT capability (topic design, QoS, retained messages, sessions) and secure connectivity over LTE/4G.
  • Backend engineering in one or more languages (C#, Go, Python, Java) building REST/gRPC APIs and event-driven services.
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS/Azure/GCP) covering networking, IAM, containers (Docker/Kubernetes), and IaC (Terraform/CDK).
  • Observability experience (Prometheus/OpenTelemetry or similar), dashboards, and alerting aligned to latency/availability/data completeness.
  • Data engineering foundations: schema design, serialisation (JSON/Avro/Protobuf), time-series and data lake patterns, retention/governance.

Highly regarded:

  • V2X/DSRC telemetry characteristics and implications for cloud aggregation/analytics.
  • Experience supporting safety cases, incident reconstruction, and regulatory evidence with robust data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with RS-232 integrated systems, GNSS data handling, and control-system observability.
  • React/TypeScript UI work for dashboards and operator tooling.
  • Digital twins, replay frameworks, rules engines/stream processing, and spatiotemporal visualisation (GNSS traces/events).
