What are you going to do

Location: Yokohama, Japan Duration: 2 Years (Contract)

We are seeking an experienced Technical Safety Engineer to support a major LNG development project during the Detailed Engineering phase. The successful candidate will work closely with EPC contractors and project stakeholders to ensure process safety requirements are incorporated into the design, risks are reduced to ALARP, and technical safety deliverables meet project and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical safety and process safety engineering support throughout detailed engineering.
  • Participate in and review safety studies including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, QRA, and consequence assessments.
  • Review fire protection, fire & gas detection, hazardous area classification, facility layout, escape and evacuation design.
  • Ensure safety requirements are effectively integrated into engineering deliverables and vendor packages.
  • Identify technical safety risks, gaps, and deviations, and drive timely resolution.
  • Support SIMOPS assessments, management of change (MOC), technical assurance, and design reviews.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and EPC contractors to promote safe and practical design solutions.

Essential skills and knowledge 

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Technical Safety / Process Safety Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, QRA, ALARP, fire protection, hazardous area classification, and process safety management.
  • Experience supporting FEED, Detailed Engineering, and project execution phases for major energy, LNG, oil & gas, or petrochemical projects.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors and multicultural project teams.
  • Familiarity with international process safety standards and industry best practices.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • LNG project experience is highly preferred.
  • English proficiency required; Japanese language skills are advantageous.

Additional Requirements

  • Based full-time in Yokohama, Japan.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work permit).
  • Willing to undertake medical and site access screening requirements.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
