Introduction
Brunel is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support the delivery of custom-designed water treatment projects.
Working within a cross-functional engineering team, the successful candidate will complete electrical and instrumentation designs for complex projects while ensuring customer requirements, quality standards, schedules, budgets, and project risks are effectively managed. The position will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, with the potential to lead EI&C engineering teams on larger projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop electrical and instrumentation designs for complex water treatment projects.
- Read, interpret, and provide input on P&IDs, general arrangements, process design guidelines, engineering standards, and best-practice documentation.
- Interpret and apply detailed contract requirements and technical specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations and select instrumentation for water treatment facilities.
- Prepare instrument lists, automatic valve lists, datasheets, termination drawings, loop diagrams, and installation details.
- Design complex low-voltage industrial control systems in accordance with UL and Canadian Electrical Code requirements.
- Develop single-line diagrams, load lists, I/O lists, control-panel schematics, network architectures, and related documentation.
- Select VFDs, starters, control-panel components, instrumentation, and equipment suitable for the application.
- Design control panels and select equipment for use in Class I, Division 2 areas.
- Manage assigned scope, budget, and schedule while proactively identifying project risks and opportunities.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, project management, and other internal teams.
- Provide technical guidance and develop practical solutions to meet project and customer requirements.
- Support project bids and proposal development.
- Participate in customer-facing factory acceptance testing.
- Provide technical support to production facilities and assist with project commissioning.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the EI&C team.
- Lead EI&C engineering activities on larger or more complex projects, as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant electrical, instrumentation, or controls engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing complex industrial control systems.
- Experience designing low-voltage industrial control systems in accordance with UL and Canadian Electrical Code requirements.
- Experience designing control panels and selecting equipment for Class I, Division 2 environments.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation selection, panel design, electrical schematics, and control-system documentation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting, documentation, coordination, and presentations.
- Ability to collaborate with and provide leadership to cross-functional project teams.
- Ability to interpret detailed customer specifications and apply established engineering procedures and standards.
- Valid passport and driver's licence.
- Ability to travel approximately 15% for meetings, site visits, factory acceptance testing, and project support.
- Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement requiring three days per week in the office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PLC, HMI, SCADA, and industrial control-system design or programming.
- Understanding of low-voltage power-distribution system design.
- Knowledge of hydraulics and fluid-mechanics fundamentals.
- Understanding of basic water chemistry and water treatment processes.
- Strong customer-facing skills and the ability to balance internal and external project requirements.
