What are you going to do

Brunel Energy is recruiting an Electrical Commissioning Engineer to work with a major oil and gas company on a 6-month contract in Nederland, TX.

  • Lead and execute electrical testing and commissioning of low- and medium-voltage systems up to 15kV, including switchgear, MCCs, transformers, breakers, and protective relays.
  • Support plant startup, energization, functional testing, interlock verification, and system turnover.
  • Develop commissioning plans and test packages based on engineering drawings, vendor manuals, relay settings, project ITPs, and industry standards (IEEE/NETA).
  • Coordinate with construction, QA/QC, engineering, operations, instrumentation, and controls teams to ensure system readiness.
  • Perform and oversee live electrical testing, including relay trip checks, breaker timing, insulation resistance, and contact resistance testing.
  • Supervise subcontractors, field electricians, and third-party testing companies, managing scope, productivity, safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Conduct RFPC reviews, field walkdowns, punch list management, and turnover documentation through final handover.
  • Identify design or documentation deficiencies and coordinate design changes and issue resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes, project quality requirements, NFPA 70E, LOTO, permits, and site safety procedures.

Essential skills and knowledge 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent military/industrial certification, with 6-9 years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience with LV/MV systems, including switchgear, MCCs, transformers, power distribution, and protective relays.
  • Strong background in electrical commissioning, functional testing, energization, and system turnover.
  • Experience programming, configuring, testing, and troubleshooting protective relays, particularly SEL/GE Multilin; familiarity with SEL AcSELerator QuickSet.
  • 3+ years supervising electrical craft or subcontractors during commissioning or maintenance.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation/control interfaces, signal verification, and interlock testing.
  • Experience with commissioning planning, test procedures, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, and progress tracking.
  • Knowledge of LOTO, work permits/authorizations, NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NETA standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including Excel, Word, and Access, for testing, tracking, reporting, and documentation.
