Introduction

We are currently seeking an experienced Environment Specialist to join the Asset Retirement HSE team of a leading global oil & gas organisation.

This is a 2-year contract opportunity working on a FIFO 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off roster, providing hands-on environmental support across a major Asset Retirement program encompassing decommissioning, remediation, well abandonment and associated project activities.

What are you going to do

Reporting to the HSE Team Lead - Asset Retirement, you will work closely with project teams, contractors, operational personnel and environmental specialists to support the safe, compliant and environmentally responsible delivery of Asset Retirement activities.

The Role

The Environment Specialist will provide practical environmental guidance and assurance across field-based operations and projects, with a strong focus on environmental compliance, risk management and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting field-based environmental assurance, verification and validation activities across Asset Retirement worksites.
  • Supporting environmental monitoring and sampling programs covering air, water, waste and soil.
  • Providing support across waste management, fauna handling and other environmental field activities.
  • Supporting environmental risk assessments and the implementation of appropriate controls.
  • Developing and delivering environmental training, awareness initiatives and environmental leadership programs.
  • Supporting teams and contractors to build environmental capability and improve environmental performance.
  • Participating in projects and working groups relating to environmental risk, waste management, contaminated land, rehabilitation and continuous improvement.
  • Building effective working relationships across HSE, project teams, contractors, business partners, regulators and corporate environmental teams.
  • Supporting environmental regulatory approvals, compliance obligations, audits and reporting requirements.
  • Participating in Incident Management and Emergency Response activities, including emergency exercises and response events.
  • Supporting environmental and wildlife response activities where required.
  • Facilitating incident investigations and learning events using recognised methodologies including 5-Why, SAFE, Why-Tree and Learning Teams.
  • Applying Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to support sustainable improvements in environmental and HSE performance.

Essential skills and knowledge 

To be considered for this opportunity, you will ideally have:

  • A Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying environmental management systems and environmental risk management principles in a practical operational or project environment.
  • Strong field-based environmental experience and the ability to provide practical advice to frontline personnel and contractors.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • The confidence to operate as a visible HSE professional and engage effectively with leaders, frontline workers, contractors and regulators.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to adapt your approach to different stakeholder groups.
  • The ability and willingness to work a FIFO 2:2 roster.
  • You must have current right to work in Australia to be considered for this role

Experience in some or all of the following will be highly regarded:

  • Environmental assurance, compliance,monitoring and sampling
  • Contaminated land management and remediation.
  • Waste management.
  • Fauna handling.
  • Emergency response and oil spill response..
  • Major projects, construction or operational environments.
  • Decommissioning, remediation or Asset Retirement activities.
