About this role

The Hull Painter is responsible for surface preparation, application of protective coatings, and painting of vessel hulls to prevent corrosion, fouling, and damage, while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform surface preparation activities including blasting, grinding, washing, scraping, and sanding of vessel hulls
  • Apply marine coatings such as primers, anti-corrosive paints, anti-fouling coatings, and top coats according to specifications
  • Mix, prepare, and apply paints and coatings using spray guns, rollers, and brushes
  • Follow coating procedures, thickness requirements, and drying/curing times as per technical data sheets
  • Inspect painted surfaces for defects such as runs, sags, pinholes, or uneven coverage and carry out touch-ups as required
  • Operate and maintain painting and surface preparation equipment safely
  • Comply with all safety regulations, permits, and PPE requirements (e.g. working at height, confined spaces)
  • Follow environmental controls related to paint waste, solvents, and blasting residues
  • Work closely with supervisors, QC inspectors, and other trades to meet project timelines
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in work areas
  • Report equipment issues, material shortages, or safety concerns to supervisors
  • Minimum Secondary education or equivalent (preferred)
  • Certification in industrial/marine painting or blasting (advantage)
  • Valid safety certifications (e.g. Working at Height, Confined Space – if applicable)
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in hull painting or marine/industrial painting
  • Experience working in shipyards, dry docks, or offshore environments is preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of marine coatings, paint systems, and surface preparation standards
  • Ability to read and follow paint specifications and work instructions
  • Familiarity with spray painting and abrasive blasting equipment
  • Good attention to detail and quality standards
  • Physically fit and able to work at height, in confined spaces, and in marine environments
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Safety & Working Conditions

  • Work may involve heights, confined spaces, and exposure to fumes and noise
  • Use of full PPE is mandatory
  • Shift work, overtime, or offshore assignments may be required
