Introduction

We are representing an established drilling contractor seeking an experienced, practical and field-focused safety professional with land drilling, high-risk work and commissioning experience. Working on a 2:2 roster, you will support VR-330 operations, coach frontline crews, strengthen permit and risk controls, maintain compliance and help deliver safe, efficient drilling in a remote mining environment.

What are you going to do

As Safety Officer, you will work closely with Drillers, Offsiders, Supervisors, client representatives and site HSE teams to support the safe commissioning, start-up and operation of a specialist land drilling rig.

You will provide practical day-to-day safety support, coach frontline teams, strengthen permit and risk controls, conduct field inspections and ensure compliance with company standards, client procedures and Western Australian legislative requirements.

This role will suit an experienced safety professional who is comfortable working around drilling equipment, mobile plant and high-risk activities, and who enjoys being visible in the field, building credibility with crews and delivering practical safety outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily HSE support across land drilling operations and field crews.
  • Support the safe commissioning, start-up and operation of the VR-330 drill rig and associated mobile equipment.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits and field leadership interactions.
  • Review and support permits, work packs, JHAs, Take 5s, SWMS and pre-start risk assessments.
  • Monitor compliance with company, client and WA statutory safety requirements.
  • Provide safety oversight for high-risk activities, including lifting, confined space, mobile plant and stored energy.
  • Investigate incidents, hazards and near misses, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintain incident registers, safety statistics and compliance documentation.
  • Deliver safety inductions, toolbox talks and refresher training.
  • Coach supervisors and crews in hazard identification, critical controls and risk management.
  • Support emergency response planning, drills and site safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate health monitoring, fitness for work and wellbeing initiatives where required.
  • Liaise with client HSE teams, site management and drilling supervisors.
  • Support injury management and return-to-work processes where applicable.
  • Drive continuous improvement across drilling, commissioning and field-based operations.

Essential skills and knowledge 

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience in a Safety Officer or HSE Advisor role within land drilling, oil and gas, mining or heavy construction.
  • Strong understanding of WA WHS and mining safety legislation.
  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent qualification.
  • Current C Class Driver's Licence.
  • Strong incident investigation and risk management capability.
  • Experience supporting permit-to-work systems and high-risk activities.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Ability to coach and influence drilling crews and frontline leaders.
  • Ability to work independently within remote FIFO operations.

Highly Regarded

  • Previous experience with an oil and gas or specialist drilling contractor.
  • Land rig commissioning, start-up or mobilisation experience.
  • Directional drilling or VR-330 rig experience.
  • Experience supporting lifting, confined space, mobile plant and stored-energy activities.
  • ICAM, TapRooT or similar incident investigation training.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Mental Health First Aid.
  • HR Driver's Licence.
  • Return to Work Coordinator experience.
