Marine Automation Technician (OT / Cybersecurity Support)

Location: Remote (U.S.) with up to 75-80% travel (vessels & port facilities)

Duration: 12-month contract (40 hrs/week)

What are you going to do

Overview

We are seeking a Marine Automation Technician to support a United States Coast Guard (USCG) cybersecurity compliance initiative. This role focuses on operational technology (OT) asset data collection, system documentation, and inventory management across vessel and shoreside environments.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in industrial control systems, OT networking, and cybersecurity fundamentals, with a focus on compliance, documentation accuracy, and operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Identify, validate, and document OT assets across vessels and regulated facilities
  • Work with PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems to understand system roles and connectivity
  • Interpret and document OT architectures, including controllers, networks, and field devices
  • Analyze and work with industrial communication protocols (modern and legacy)
  • Apply OT cybersecurity principles, including:
  • VLAN segmentation and network design
  • SSL/TLS certificates and secure communication
  • Role-based access control and least privilege
  • Read and interpret:
  • P&IDs
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Network diagrams
  • Maintain awareness of IT/OT integration, networks, and server infrastructure
  • Produce clear technical documentation for both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Project & Delivery Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, vendors, and stakeholders
  • Follow safety standards, compliance requirements, and site procedures
  • Identify risks, scope changes, and data gaps early
  • Deliver tasks accurately, on time, and within scope
  • Support multiple concurrent projects
  • Contribute to improving OT documentation standards and inventory processes

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Industrial and maritime environments
  • Loud, dusty, or variable temperature settings
  • Ability to:
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Climb ladders and work at heights
  • Stand and move for extended periods
  • Must follow PPE and safety protocols
  • Comfortable working around energized equipment and machinery

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 75-80% travel across vessels and port facilities
  • Remote when not traveling

Additional Requirements

  • Must hold or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 60 days
  • Willingness to work onboard vessels and in industrial environments

Essential skills and knowledge 

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 7-10 years of experience as a:
  • Marine Automation Technician
  • Controls Engineer
  • OR similar role in industrial, maritime, or critical infrastructure environments
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Industrial control systems (PLCs, HMIs, SCADA)
  • OT networks and infrastructure

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with compliance or regulatory frameworks (e.g., USCG, NERC, ISA/IEC 62443)
  • Understanding of OT cybersecurity principles
  • Experience working in distributed or remote environments (vessels or field operations)
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy
