What are you going to do

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of occupational hygiene programs and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain risk-based exposure assessment strategies, including exposure inventories, exposure groups, sampling plans, monitoring programs, and exposure control recommendations.
  • Identify, assess, and manage occupational health risks related to metals, dusts, fumes, process gases, chemicals, noise, and thermal stress.
  • Evaluate and verify the effectiveness of occupational hygiene controls and recommend improvements using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to operations, maintenance, and leadership teams regarding occupational hygiene concerns and exposure-control initiatives.
  • Lead and support occupational hygiene and occupational health programs, including health protection, hearing conservation, WHMIS, asbestos management, chemical management, contamination control, biological monitoring, and medical surveillance.
  • Partner with occupational health professionals and external stakeholders to support medical surveillance and biological monitoring programs.
  • Ensure occupational hygiene data is accurately collected, validated, analyzed, trended, and reported through applicable data management systems.
  • Conduct audits and reviews of occupational hygiene programs and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheet (SDS) programs and provide technical expertise related to chemical hazards and product stewardship.
  • Participate in chemical review and approval processes, including the evaluation of new chemicals, substitutions, exposure pathways, monitoring requirements, and control measures.
  • Develop and deliver training, educational materials, and awareness programs related to occupational hygiene risks and controls.
  • Lead exposure reduction initiatives and collaborate with operational leaders to identify and mitigate higher-risk exposures.
  • Provide occupational hygiene input into projects, operational changes, shutdowns, procurement activities, design reviews, and management of change processes.
  • Represent the organization during audits, regulatory interactions, stakeholder engagements, and occupational health and hygiene forums.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop occupational hygiene personnel while ensuring effective delivery of monitoring, documentation, and field program activities.

Essential skills and knowledge 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Hygiene, Occupational or Environmental Health, Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) is preferred.
  • Candidates actively working toward certification may be considered.
  • Minimum five years of industrial occupational hygiene experience within mining, smelting, refining, chemical processing, manufacturing, fertilizer production, or other heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience leading exposure assessment programs and managing occupational health risks in complex operating environments.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing technical leadership to hygienists, technicians, contractors, or technical personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational hygiene principles, exposure assessment methodologies, biological monitoring, air monitoring, respiratory protection programs, and occupational health regulations.
  • Familiarity with chemical hazard management, SDS administration, WHMIS, medical surveillance programs, and exposure reduction strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex exposure data and communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, stakeholder management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
