Introduction

Candidates with experience welding high-strength structural steel in quality-controlled environments will be highly regarded.

What are you going to do

  • Weld shipbuilding-grade structural steel plate, including D and DH36 class and other high-strength steel grades (typically 5mm-25mm thick).
  • Perform welding primarily using Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) and Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW/Stick) used for supporting tasks.
  • Carry out welding in all positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical-up, overhead, and out-of-position welding.
  • Complete single-sided welds using ceramic backing in hull units, tanks, double bottoms, and confined spaces.
  • Follow approved Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) and defence quality standards to ensure compliance.
  • Produce welds that meet visual inspection and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) requirements, including ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT), and radiographic testing (RT).
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organised work environment while adhering to all safety procedures and quality requirements.
  • Operate and maintain welding tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Work collaboratively with production supervisors, trades trainers, and team members to achieve project milestones.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the production environment.

Essential skills and knowledge 

We're seeking experienced Coded Welders with a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Heavy Fabrication/Welding) or equivalent, along with recent hands-on experience in a heavy industrial, fabrication or manufacturing environment.

You will bring a strong background in coded welding, with qualifications or testing completed to recognised standards such as AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS 2980, ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX. Proven experience performing vertical-up and overhead welding is essential, along with demonstrated capability using FCAW, GMAW and MMAW processes on structural steel applications.

Successful candidates will be comfortable working in challenging industrial environments, including confined spaces, working at heights and wearing full PPE for extended periods. Availability to work permanent afternoon or night shifts is required.

You must have unrestricted Australian work rights and be able to obtain and maintain all site access and security requirements, including relevant industry clearances, as well as successfully complete police, medical and drug & alcohol screening as part of the recruitment process

What we offer

  • $51.92 per hour base rate
  • 30 percent shift uplift for afternoon and night shift (approximately $67.50 per hour loaded)
  • Performance based rate increases at 3 and 9 months, plus 5 percent annual increases in July 2027 and July 2028
  • Relocation package to Adelaide on offer
  • 9 day working fortnight
