Introduction

What are you going to do

  • Welding shipbuilding-grade structural steel across a range of plate thicknesses
  • Performing welding primarily using Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW or flux core), with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW or MIG) and Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW or stick) used for supporting activities
  • Welding in all positions including flat, horizontal, vertical-up and overhead positions
  • Completing single-sided welds using ceramic backing within hull units, tanks, double bottoms and confined spaces
  • Working in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications and applicable Defence quality requirements
  • Producing welds that meet visual inspection and non-destructive testing requirements which may include ultrasonic, magnetic particle and radiographic testing
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, welding symbols and applicable specifications
  • Maintaining welding tools, equipment and materials in good working order
  • Working safely in confined spaces and at heights while wearing the required PPE
  • Collaborating with production supervisors, trades trainers and other team members to achieve programme milestones
  • Contributing to continuous improvement across the production environment

Essential skills and knowledge 

  • Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade with a heavy fabrication or welding specialisation or an equivalent recognised trade qualification
  • Recent hands-on welding experience within a heavy industrial, structural fabrication, manufacturing or shipbuilding environment
  • Demonstrated coded welding experience with qualifications or testing completed to recognised standards such as AS/NZS ISO 9606.1, AS/NZS 2980, AS/NZS 1554.1 or ASME Section IX
  • Strong practical experience using FCAW on structural steel
  • Demonstrated ability to perform vertical-up and overhead welding
  • Experience using GMAW and MMAW welding processes
  • Ability to read and follow engineering drawings, welding symbols and Welding Procedure Specifications
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality and reliable workmanship
  • Capacity to work in confined spaces and at heights and to wear full PPE for extended periods
  • Availability to work a permanent afternoon or night shift

Security and pre-employment requirements

As a Defence security clearance is required for these positions applicants must be Australian citizens and must either hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain the appropriate clearance.

International Traffic in Arms Regulations may also apply and an applicant's nationality or citizenship history may be considered when determining eligibility.

Employment will be subject to satisfying all site-access and pre-employment requirements including identity and work-right verification, a national police check, a medical assessment and drug and alcohol screening.

What we offer

  • Permanent full-time employment
  • Base rate of $51.92 per hour
  • 30% loading for afternoon and night shifts taking the starting rate to approximately $67.49 per hour
  • 5% annual rate increases scheduled for July 2027 and July 2028
  • Performance-based rate progression at three and nine months subject to confirmation and applicable employment conditions
  • Relocation assistance for eligible candidates relocating to Adelaide
  • Nine-day working fortnight
  • Long-term career development on a major Australian naval shipbuilding programme
  • Structured workplace training and opportunities to further develop specialist shipbuilding skills
