Introduction

Brunel is currently searching for a Commissioning Mechanical & Piping Lead for a contract opportunity with our mining client located in Bagdad, AZ on a 4x1 rotation.

What are you going to do 

The Mechanical & Piping Lead - Commissioning is responsible for leading and executing all mechanical and piping commissioning activities to ensure systems are safely and efficiently brought into operation. This includes rotating and static equipment, piping systems, pressure systems, and associated auxiliaries.

The role ensures that all mechanical and piping systems are installed, flushed, cleaned, tested, and functionally verified in compliance with project specifications, codes, and safety requirements, supporting a smooth transition through project phases to start-up and operations.

DUTIES:

  1. Commissioning Planning & Preparation
  • Support/implement mechanical and piping commissioning procedures, Inspection test plans (ITP), method statements, and checklists.
  • Support/implement system/subsystem boundaries in line with commissioning sequence and priorities.
  • Review engineering deliverables (P&IDs, isometrics, datasheets, vendor manuals).
  • Support commissioning manager in resources plans, tools, consumables, and equipment requirements.
  1. Mechanical Equipment Pre-commissioning
  • Supervise pre-commissioning and commissioning of:
    • Rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, blowers, turbines)
    • Static equipment (vessels, exchangers, tanks, boilers)
  • Ensure completion of:
    • Alignment checks
    • Lubrication and oil flushing
    • Mechanical run tests and performance checks
  • Verify vendor requirements and ensure OEM supervision where required.
  1. Piping Systems Pre-commissioning
  • Leading activities related to:
    • Flushing, blowing (air/steam), and cleaning of lines
    • Hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing
    • Leak testing and reinstatement
  • Ensure proper installation and removal of temporary items (blinds, strainers, spool pieces).
  • Verify piping systems compliance with specifications, codes (ASME, API), and project requirements.
  1. Pre-Commissioning & System Completion
  • Oversee mechanical completion activities and system walkdowns.
  • Ensure readiness for commissioning:
    • Punch list clearance (Category A/B/C)
    • System preservation and reinstatement
  • Coordinate system handover from construction to pre-commissioning (MC) to commissioning and to operations.
  1. Commissioning & Start-Up with Operational Support
  • Participate in:
    • Initial equipment runs and system pressurization
    • Plant start-up and stabilization
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and piping issues during commissioning and start-up.
  • Support performance testing and reliability runs.
  1. Pre-commissioning & Documentation
  • Ensure completion and accuracy of:
    • Mechanical Completion Certificates (MCC)
    • Inspection and Test Records (ITRs)
    • Pressure test packs and reports
    • Flushing/blowing records
  • Review and update red-line drawings and as-built documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards (ASME, API, ISO, etc.) and project QA/QC requirements.
  1. HSE Compliance
  • Enforce strict adherence to HSE policies and procedures Such as permit to work, LOTOTO, etc.
  • Ensure safe execution of high-risk activities such as:
    • Pressure testing
    • Equipment energization
    • Rotating equipment start-up
  • Conduct toolbox talks and risk assessments.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the commissioning team.
  1. Interface & Coordination
  • Coordinate with:
    • I&C, Electrical, and Process commissioning teams
    • Construction and QA/QC teams
    • Vendors and OEM representatives
    • Client and operations personnel
  • Participate in daily/weekly coordination meetings and progress reporting.
  • Support handover activities from construction to pre-commissioning to commissioning and to operations.
  1. Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead and supervise mechanical and piping commissioning technicians.
  • Assign tasks and monitor progress against schedule.
  • Promote a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

Essential skills and knowledge 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent) (or equivalent 5 years of field experience)
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in mechanical/piping engineering
  • At least 5 years in commissioning leadership roles
  • Experience in large EPC projects (mining, oil & gas, power, smelting, or industrial plants)
  • Proven experience in commissioning & start-up phases.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and coordination abilities
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet tight commissioning deadlines
  • MUST be eligible to work in the U.S. for any employer without sponsorship.

What we offer

OFFER:

  • This position offers a flat daily rate for days worked only. 5 day work week, 10-hour workdays. All full-time Brunel contractors are eligible for benefits. Your medical, dental and vision will begin on your first day of employment. 401K matching - 50% match, up to 3%.
  • Non-local candidates to Bagdad, Arizona will be on a 4x1 rotation and provided single-status, fully furnished accommodations, airfare to/from home, rental car, fuel reimbursement, plus a $750/month stipend for food. Rotation will be 4 weeks on, 1 week off (not working).
