Materials Engineer

Are you passionate about using your knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics to create new substances and enhance the properties of existing materials? If so, a career in Materials Engineering may be the perfect fit for you. As a Materials Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work in research, manufacturing, and materials development across a wide range of industries. You will use scientific principles to investigate, modify, and control the behaviour of substances, ultimately selecting materials for specific products and developing production procedures.

Materials engineer job profile

As a Materials Engineer, your main responsibility is to improve the performance of materials or create new materials that can advance technologies and products. You will work with a variety of substances, ranging from ceramics and plastics to polymers and industrial minerals. Your role will involve testing materials for heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and other qualities, as well as analysing data using computer modelling software.

You will also assess the environmental impact of materials and ensure that products comply with national and international standards. In addition, you may be responsible for identifying and solving material failures or production problems. Collaboration with colleagues in various departments, such as manufacturing, technical support, and marketing, will be crucial.

Materials engineer responsibilities

Key responsibilities of Materials Engineers may include:

  • Selecting the best materials for specific purposes based on their properties
  • Testing materials for heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and other qualities
  • Analysing data using computer modelling software
  • Assessing the environmental impact of materials and products
  • Developing prototypes and testing them
  • Overseeing quality control processes
  • Liaising with suppliers, customers, and manufacturing staff
  • Supervising engineering and technical staff

What is a biomaterials engineer?

A biomaterials engineer specialises in creating materials that interact with biological systems, such as medical devices and tissue scaffolds. This differs from a materials engineer, who works across various industries to develop and optimize materials for different applications, including electronics and manufacturing. Biomaterials engineers focus on biological compatibility, while materials engineers have a broader range of applications.

Materials engineer qualifications

To pursue a career as a Materials Engineer in Singapore, a strong educational background is essential. In high school, it is recommended to focus on maths and science courses to develop a solid foundation. As an undergraduate student, majoring in engineering, such as materials or civil engineering, will provide you with the necessary skills for the job. While a master's degree is not always required, it can enhance your career prospects. Some universities offer combined bachelor's and master's degree programs.

In terms of training, internships during college and entry-level positions in manufacturing and materials can provide valuable hands-on experience. Certification is not typically required for a materials engineer role, but it can demonstrate your commitment to the field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in material science or engineering, preferably materials or civil engineering
  • Relevant internships or entry-level experience
  • Obtain a professional engineering license by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams.
  • Complete a 4-year training period under a licensed professional engineer.
  • Certification Application: Apply for your official certificate from the Professional Engineers Board (PEB), usually within five years of passing the PE exam.
