Introduction

The Energy Marshal is a key role responsible for overseeing all electrical energisation activities during the construction phase of a mission-critical data centre project. This position ensures that all energisation processes are executed safely, systematically, and in strict accordance with industry standards, project specifications, and client safety requirements.

The Energy Marshal serves as the central point of coordination between contractors, commissioning teams, safety personnel, and client representatives to manage the safe energisation of electrical systems-including low, medium, and high voltage. This includes planning, scheduling, reviewing energisation procedures, and ensuring full compliance with lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) protocols.

This role demands a deep understanding of electrical infrastructure, energisation risk management, and strong leadership in safety coordination. The Energy Marshal plays a critical role in maintaining system integrity, preventing incidents, and ensuring that energisation milestones align with the broader project timeline.

What are you going to do

  • Develop and implement energization management plans and strategies to optimize the safe activation of electrical systems and equipment during the construction phase.

  • Apply and oversee Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures to ensure a safe working environment on an active construction site.

  • Lead and coordinate all energization activities, ensuring proper communication between construction, commissioning, HSE, QA/QC, and client teams.

  • Monitor compliance with local and international electrical codes, energy regulations, and sustainability standards, including energy efficiency requirements.

  • Review and validate Method of Procedures (MoPs), Risk Assessments, Energization Plans, and related safety documentation.

  • Maintain an accurate Energization Tracker, keeping records of energized zones, pending activities, and safety approvals.

  • Conduct pre-energization inspections to confirm readiness and ensure safe conditions for system activation.

  • Provide hands-on guidance and training to construction teams on electrical safety, LOTO techniques, and best practices for working around live equipment.

  • Ensure tidy, organized, and clean electrical panel installations to prevent arc flash risks and support long-term reliability.

  • Perform routine inspections of energized panels, ensuring installations meet safety and quality standards.

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, best practices, and safety trends related to energy marshaling and construction energization.

  • Participate in daily coordination meetings and proactively resolve any issues related to energization delays or hazards.

  • Promote a culture of electrical safety and operational excellence throughout the project site.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Preferably Bachelor's degree in engineering, Energy Management, Sustainable Design, or a related field but not required. Field experience as an energy marshal or an electrician is more desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in energy management, or a related field, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, and construction practices, including familiarity with energy and electrical codes and energy marshaling certifications.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, materials, and systems, with the ability to identify opportunities for improving safe energization and electrical housekeeping opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate energy-related concepts, provide training, and collaborate with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to assess energization and schedule challenges, propose solutions, and implement effective energization strategies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse project teams, contractors, architects, engineers, and energy consultants to achieve safe energization practices and meet schedule goals.
