Introduction

Brunel has partnered with a leading resources company on a contract opportunity for an Embedded Developer. This role suits someone with collision avoidance systems experience who can deliver safety-critical, production-grade software for real-time environments.

What are you going to do

This role will design, implement, and optimise safety-critical decision-making software that prevents collisions across heavy mobile equipment. Working within a cross-functional autonomy squad, you'll deliver production-grade C/C++ components that integrate sensors, localisation, mapping, and control to ensure reliable fail-operational behaviour in dynamic, mixed-traffic environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build collision avoidance components with a focus on performance, safety, modularity, testability, observability, and redundancy.
  • Uplift an existing codebase to production standard, including compliance with MISRA or similar guidelines.
  • Analyse field data and telemetry to scope and deliver new features that improve real-world performance.
  • Produce and maintain technical design documentation, safety cases, interface specifications, and operational guidance.
  • Perform hazard analysis and FMEA, and develop and validate safety-related functions and diagnostics.
  • Lead reviews of requirements and architecture, defining clear component boundaries and interfaces.
  • Run code, design, and test reviews to meet coding standards, safety requirements, and established practices.
  • Create and maintain unit, integration, HIL, and simulation-based tests, including regression suites for edge cases and collision scenarios.
  • Support field triage and root-cause resolution using logs, telemetry, and simulation reproductions.
  • Mentor engineers in modern C/C++, safe concurrency, numerical robustness, and data-driven validation.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • 3+ years' experience delivering real-time or near real-time systems in C/C++.
  • Experience across collision avoidance, motion planning, or ADAS, including control integration.
  • Strong modelling capability for control and planning (kinematic/dynamic models, constraints, feasibility).
  • Modern C++ (C++17+), performance optimisation, and strong engineering workflows (CMake, Docker, Git/PRs/CI).
  • Linux and networking fundamentals, plus observability practices (metrics, tracing, structured logs).
  • Safety-critical development experience, including safety mechanisms, watchdogs, and degraded modes.
  • Familiarity with standards such as MISRA/AUTOSAR and static analysis tooling.
  • Experience with DDS and/or ROS 2 in distributed systems (QoS, message schemas, lifecycle nodes).
  • Ability to scope work and estimate effort accurately.

Highly regarded:

  • V2X / DSRC communications experience.
  • Data-driven collision avoidance, PID control, brake control algorithms.
  • GPS/GNSS experience.
  • Embedded software delivery in production environments (mining, automotive, rail).
