Introduction

Brunel is currently searching for a Commissioning Mechanical & Piping Technician for a contract opportunity with our mining client located in Bagdad, AZ on a 4x1 rotation.

What are you going to do 

The Commissioning Mechanical & Piping Technician is responsible for executing field activities related to pre-commissioning, commissioning and testing of mechanical equipment and piping systems. Supporting the Commissioning Team ensuring that all mechanical equipment and piping systems are properly installed, cleaned, tested and ready for commissioning, safe start-up and operation in accordance with project specifications, procedures and safety standards.

DUTIES:

  • Installation Verification
  • Verify installation of mechanical equipment and piping systems including:
    • Rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, blowers)
    • Static equipment (vessels, exchangers, tanks)
    • Piping lines, valves and supports
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • P&IDs
    • Isometric drawings
    • General Arrangement (GA) drawings
  • Check alignment, bolting, gaskets, supports and tagging

  • Pre-Commissioning Activities
  • Assist in pre-commissioning tasks such as:
  • Line flushing and cleaning (Water, air, chemical)
  • Steam blowing
  • System drying and preservation
  • Support reinstatement activities after testing (removal of blinds, temporary strainers, test spools).
  • Verify cleanliness and readiness of systems prior to commissioning.

  • Construction Pressure Testing & Lead Checks
  • Witness the execution of Hydrostatic testing and Pneumatic testing (under supervision)
  • Check for leads, pressure stability and system integrity.
  • Ensure proper installation of test equipment and safety devices.
  • Support preparation and completion of pressure test packs.

  • Mechanical Equipment Commissioning
  • Assist with Pre-commissioning of rotating equipment:
  • Coupling checks and alignment (laser/dial)
  • Lubrication and oil filling
  • Initial start-up checks (dry runs, rotation checks)
  • Monitor motor solo run and pump mechanical run and report abnormalities such as vibration, noise, temperature, or leaks.
  • Support troubleshooting and corrective maintenance.

  • Piping Systems Commissioning
  • Assist in inspection and commissioning of piping systems:
    • Valve operation checks
    • Line integrity verification
    • Flow path verification
  • Ensure systems are properly reinstated and ready for commissioning.

  • Start-up Support
  • Participate in commissioning (with process conditions)
  • Monitor systems during start-up and report any issues.
  • Assist in stabilization of systems during start-up.

  • Documentation & Reporting
  • Complete and maintain:
    • Pre-commissioning checklists
    • Pressure test records
    • Flushing and cleaning reports
  • Report progress, issues, and punch items to the mechanical and piping lead.
  • Assist in updating red-line drawings and as-built documentation.

  • Punch List & System Completion
  • Identify and report mechanical and piping punch list items.
  • Support closure of punch list items in coordination with construction and commissioning teams.
  • Ensure systems meet completion criteria before handover.

  • HSE Compliance
  • Follow all HSE procedures and policies such as permit to work, LOTOTO, etc.
  • Ensure safe handling of:
    • Pressurized systems
    • Rotating equipment
    • Heavy mechanical components
  • The use of appropriate PPE for different tasks.
  • Participate in toolbox talks and hazard identification.

Essential skills and knowledge 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Technical Diploma / Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (or equivalent + 3 years of field experience).
  • Minimum 3-8 years of experience in mechanical or piping work.
  • Experience in pre-commissioning and commissioning activities in EPC projects.
  • Experience in oil & gas, power, mining, smelter, or heavy industry is preferred.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good communication skills.
  • MUST be eligible to work in the U.S. for any employer without the need for sponsorship.

Offer:

  • This position offers a flat daily rate for days worked only. 5 day work week, 10-hour workdays. All full-time Brunel contractors are eligible for benefits. Your medical, dental and vision will begin on your first day of employment. 401K matching - 50% match, up to 3%.
  • Non-local candidates to Bagdad, Arizona will be on a 4x1 rotation and provided single-status, fully furnished accommodations, airfare to/from home, rental car, fuel reimbursement, plus a $750/month stipend for food. Rotation will be 4 weeks on, 1 week off (not working).
