What are you going to do 

We're partnering with a top global engineering and construction firm to find a Senior Civil Engineering Technician for their Technology, Commercial & Industrial sector. You'll join the Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) group, supporting Grid Solutions projects including substations and overhead transmission lines.

This is a lead technician role. You'll create and refine site plans, grading designs and utility layouts, set the design and graphic standards others work to, and review deliverables for quality and code compliance. There's scope to supervise a small team of technicians and to train and mentor others, so it suits someone who's ready to step beyond production drafting.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing site development packages covering grading and drainage, erosion control, access roads, fencing and underground utilities
  • Producing and modifying drawings in Civil 3D, AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Setting and communicating design standards, and reviewing others' work for accuracy and consistency
  • Running design calculations, quantity takeoffs and estimates
  • Managing drawing control and project records
  • Coordinating with other design disciplines and communicating progress and schedules to the project team
  • Supervising, training and developing technicians, and leading process improvement where needed
  • Supporting field activities when required

What you'll bring:

  • 11+ years of related civil design experience
  • Associate degree in drafting or an engineering design related technology (bachelor's preferred)
  • Advanced Civil 3D and AutoCAD skills, with MicroStation experience a strong plus
  • Substation, transmission or utility site civil experience is highly desirable
  • Experience leading, reviewing or mentoring other technicians

  • Must live within 50 miles of one of the listed offices - Overland Park KS, Ann Arbor MI, Houston TX, Dallas TX, College Station TX, Denver CO, Phoenix AZ, Orlando FL, Cary NC or Tualatin OR.
  • Successful candidates will complete pre-employment checks, which may include background, drug screen and motor vehicle records

Essential skills and knowledge 

We're looking for a senior civil designer with 11+ years of experience in site development, ideally on substation, transmission line or other utility infrastructure projects. You'll be confident working across grading and drainage, erosion control, roadways, fencing and underground utilities, with advanced skills in Civil 3D and AutoCAD. MicroStation experience is a strong plus.

You'll hold an associate degree in drafting or an engineering design related technology (bachelor's preferred). You should be comfortable acting as a lead technician: setting design standards, reviewing others' deliverables, and training or supervising junior technicians.

Candidates must live within 50 miles of Overland Park KS, Ann Arbor MI, Houston TX, Dallas TX, College Station TX, Denver CO, Phoenix AZ, Orlando FL, Cary NC or Tualatin OR, and be able to complete pre-employment background, drug and MVR checks.
