We're looking for an experienced Firmware Engineer to join our team in Enschede, Netherlands. In this role, you'll work on developing and modifying firmware for programmable logic devices, such as FPGAs, as part of broader system solutions. You'll collaborate closely with colleagues from software, hardware, and mechanical engineering to ensure reliable system integration.

As a Firmware Engineer, you will have a diverse set of responsibilities that require technical expertise, creativity, and teamwork. Your key tasks will include:

  • Requirement Specification: Collaborate with stakeholders to specify and document firmware requirements, ensuring clarity and alignment with project objectives.
  • Firmware Design and Implementation: Develop and refine firmware designs, focusing on high-quality VHDL code for FPGA systems tailored to meet specific project needs.
  • Testing and Validation: Utilize simulation tools to test firmware in virtual environments and verify its functionality in real-world setups, ensuring reliability and performance.
  • Technical Expertise: Serve as the primary point of contact for all VHDL-related inquiries, providing technical guidance to team members and stakeholders.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with software, hardware, and mechanical engineers to ensure the seamless integration of firmware into larger systems.

Your role will be instrumental in delivering quality results, and you will be expected to apply your expertise to overcome challenges and deliver innovative solutions.

Success in this role requires a blend of technical skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication. We are looking for candidates with the following capabilities:

  • FPGA Design Expertise: Proficiency in using tools like Altera Quartus and Xilinx ISE to design and debug FPGA systems. Familiarity with debugging tools such as ILA ChipScope or Signaltap is essential for identifying and resolving issues efficiently.
  • Simulation Proficiency: Extensive experience with simulation tools like Mentor Modelsim or Questa Sim for functional and gate-level simulations, enabling accurate testing and validation of firmware designs.
  • Coding Skills: Knowledge of programming languages, including C/C++, Java, and Python, to support embedded systems development and integrate firmware seamlessly into larger software architectures.
  • Analytical Thinking: The ability to evaluate complex problems, make well-founded design decisions, and collaborate effectively with team members to achieve project goals.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with fluency in English, to interact effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

To excel in this role, candidates should meet the following qualifications:

  • Educational Background: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, demonstrating a strong foundation in the principles of electronics and firmware design.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of 5 years of industrial experience specializing in VHDL for FPGA design, including expertise in RTL synthesis and timing closure.
