Introduction

Brunel is currently seeking an experienced Automation Engineer for a contract opportunity based in Oakville, Ontario. This role is ideal for a hands-on automation professional with strong PLC, HMI, and SCADA experience who enjoys working in a project-driven environment from design through commissioning.

About this role

  • Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications for industrial process systems.
  • Review and interpret engineering deliverables including P&IDs, electrical schematics, I/O lists, control narratives, instrument lists, and network architecture drawings.
  • Support project execution from design through commissioning and startup activities.
  • Participate in client meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Develop automation documentation including functional specifications, control narratives, alarm lists, and testing procedures.
  • Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Troubleshoot automation systems and provide technical support remotely and on-site.
  • Coordinate activities with electrical, process, mechanical, and project engineering teams.
  • Manage assigned project scope, schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables.
  • Support network architecture development and industrial communications integration.
  • Maintain engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.

Is this you?

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of automation, controls, or process control engineering experience.
  • Strong experience with PLC programming and industrial automation systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing HMI and SCADA applications.
  • Experience with industrial commissioning, startup, FAT, and SAT activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, control schematics, and instrumentation documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working directly with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Valid driver's license and passport.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.
