Head of Development - Renewable Energy

About the Company

Our client is a leading international renewable energy developer and independent power producer with a significant global footprint across low-carbon infrastructure.

With a strong balance sheet and long-term investment horizon, the organisation develops, owns and operates utility-scale renewable generation and energy storage assets across multiple geographies. In Australia, the business is building a substantial pipeline across wind, solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS), supported by experienced local leadership and international backing.

The company is entering a critical phase of growth and is seeking an experienced development leader to shape, scale and deliver a high-quality pipeline of projects nationally.

Scope

Reporting to the Executive Team; you will lead the Australian development function across renewable energy and BESS projects. This is a strategic leadership role with full accountability for pipeline progression from origination through to financial close.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, mentoring and growing a team of Development Managers and Project Directors

  • Driving greenfield origination, land identification and landholder negotiations

  • Overseeing development activities including planning approvals, environmental assessments, grid connection strategy and cultural heritage processes

  • Managing multi-state permitting pathways and regulatory compliance

  • Prioritising projects using structured risk and opportunity frameworks

  • Allocating resources across the portfolio to maximise value creation

  • De-risking projects from early-stage assessment through to investment-ready status

  • Supporting acquisition due diligence and self-origination initiatives

  • Coordinating cross-functional workstreams including engineering, commercial, finance and procurement

  • Engaging with landowners, communities, regulators and key external stakeholders

  • Contributing to broader portfolio strategy and long-term growth planning

  • Preparing board-level reporting and presenting to senior stakeholders and investors

This role requires both strategic oversight and hands-on development leadership across complex utility-scale assets.

Essential skills and knowledge

About You

You are a senior renewable energy development professional with a proven track record delivering large-scale projects in the Australian market.

You will likely bring:

  • 8+ years' experience in renewable energy project development

  • Demonstrated experience leading projects from origination through land, approvals and financial close

  • Strong working knowledge of Australian planning, environmental and grid connection frameworks

  • Experience in utility-scale BESS and/or wind and solar development

  • Commercial acumen with experience negotiating land tenure and key project agreements

  • Strong financial literacy and understanding of project viability and risk

  • Experience leading and developing multidisciplinary teams

  • High-level stakeholder engagement capability across regulators, communities and landowners

  • A structured, strategic approach to pipeline management and capital deployment

  • A commitment to best-practice HSE and governance standards
