Introduction

The Electrical Technician - Commissioning is responsible for performing field activities related to the installation verification, testing, commissioning, and energization of electrical systems and equipment.

What are you going to do 

This role supports the commissioning team by ensuring electrical systems are installed, tested, and operating in accordance with Client specifications, project requirements, safety standards, and operational objectives to enable a safe and successful plant start-up.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Installation Verification

* Verify installation of electrical systems and equipment, including:o MV/LV cables and cable tray systems
o Switchgear, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), and distribution boardso Power and distribution transformers
o UPS systems, motors, and field electrical equipment* Ensure installations comply with:
o Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)o Wiring and termination drawings
o Cable schedules and layouts* Inspect cable terminations, glands, labeling, grounding, and earthing.

  1. Pre-Commissioning Activities

* Perform pre-commissioning activities including:o Cable continuity and identification checks
o Insulation Resistance (IR) testingo Earth resistance testing
* Verify systems are complete and ready for energization.* Ensure electrical equipment and panels are clean and prepared for commissioning.

  1. Testing & Commissioning

* Perform and assist with electrical testing including:o Continuity and polarity testing
o Insulation resistance testingo Functional testing of control circuits
* Support engineers during commissioning of:o Switchgear and MCCs
o Transformers and protection systemso Motors, including rotation and no-load testing
* Record test results and report defects or abnormal findings.

  1. Energization Support

* Assist with electrical system energization under the direction of the Electrical Lead.* Follow approved switching procedures and isolation plans.
* Verify system readiness through safety checks and equipment inspections.* Monitor equipment during energization and immediately report any abnormalities.

  1. Equipment Commissioning

* Support commissioning activities for:o Motors and variable speed drives
o Lighting and small power systemso UPS systems and battery banks
* Assist with troubleshooting electrical faults and equipment issues.* Monitor equipment performance during commissioning and start-up.

  1. Start-Up Support

* Monitor electrical systems following energization and during plant start-up.* Assist with identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving electrical issues.
* Support reliable operation during initial commissioning and plant ramp-up.

  1. Documentation & Reporting

* Complete and maintain:o Commissioning checklists
o Test sheets and protection relay documentationo Cable test reports
o Energization records* Report commissioning progress, defects, and punch list items to the Electrical Lead.
* Assist in updating red-line drawings and as-built documentation.

  1. Punch List & System Completion

* Identify and document electrical punch list items.* Support the timely completion and closure of punch list items before system handover.
* Assist in preparing completed systems for handover to Operations.

  1. HSE Compliance

* Comply with all electrical safety procedures and HSE policies, including Permit to Work (PTW) and Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out (LOTOTO) requirements.* Wear appropriate PPE for all electrical work activities.
* Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.* Participate in toolbox talks, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and safety meetings.

Essential skills and knowledge

Education

* Technical Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), or an equivalent combination of technical training and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant field experience.

Experience

* Minimum 3-8 years of experience in electrical installation, pre-commissioning, or commissioning.* Experience on EPC or industrial projects within mining, power generation, oil & gas, smelting, or heavy industrial facilities.
* Hands-on experience working with electrical systems, equipment, and commissioning activities.

Soft Skills

* Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.* Excellent attention to detail.
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.* Good communication and organizational skills.
