Introduction

Brunel has partnered with a global autonomous systems company deploying real-world autonomy across mining, automotive and logistics, on a contract opportunity for Autonomous System Test Engineer. This is a site-based role supporting autonomous vehicle operations in a live environment. The role operates on an 8/6 roster in New South Wales, open to candidates based in NSW or Queensland.

What are you going to do

We're looking for a System Test Engineer to join our Mining Autonomy team and serve as the first line of defense on customer sites for issues coming out of our autonomy stack. Haul trucks, loaders, and dozers running our software generate huge volumes of drive logs, simulation runs, and on-site reports every day, and your job is to make sense of them: catch the real problems, weed out the noise, reproduce what you can, and get every issue into the hands of the right engineer with enough context for them to fix it fast.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering and our mining customers. You'll be in regular contact with site engineers, fleet operators, and customer technical leads, joining their standups, walking their pits when needed, and being the voice they hear when something on the trucks doesn't behave the way they expect. Customers will know you by name. Part of your job is making them feel heard: turning a frustrated phone call from a site into a clean reproduction, a tracked issue, and a clear answer on when a fix is coming. The other part is protecting our engineers' focus by making sure only real, well-characterized problems reach their queue.
You'll spend your time inside logs, dashboards, simulation tools, Jira, and on calls with customers. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with perception, planning, controls, and platform engineers, and you'll become the person both they and our customers trust to tell them what's actually broken and what isn't. Test sites are remote, conditions are dusty, and the trucks are very large, so a bias toward repeatable, evidence-based bug reports - and a calm presence on a customer call - go a long way.
If you like digging into messy data, finding the one frame where everything went sideways, and being the connective tissue between customers, field operations, and the engineers who ship fixes, this role is for you.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Robotics or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Experience in QA, test or triage on complex systems, ideally within robotics, autonomous vehicles, automotive or similar
  • Experience working directly with customers or external stakeholders, managing issues and communicating clearly under pressure
  • Strong debugging skills, with the ability to analyse logs and trace issues back to root cause
  • Comfortable working in Linux environments, with scripting experience in Python or Bash
  • Experience using Jira or similar tools to manage bug reports and issue tracking
  • Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows
  • Ability to work with large volumes of real-world data, separating signal from noise and prioritising effectively
  • Willingness to travel to site and work in a live, site-based environment

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with ROS, ROS 2 or similar robotics frameworks
  • Experience with log replay tools, simulation environments or robotics testing workflows
  • Exposure to mining, construction or heavy equipment environments
  • Experience working with sensor data such as lidar, radar, cameras or GPS/RTK
