Director, Data & AI Governance (Enterprise) 12 Month Contract Toronto, ON

What are you going to do 

Responsibilities

  • Lead enterprise-wide data and AI governance and first-line assurance activities, ensuring consistent oversight and continuous improvement
  • Conduct targeted assurance reviews across business functions and high-risk data/AI initiatives to assess compliance with internal policies and external regulations
  • Develop, track, and report on governance, risk, control, and assurance metrics; design dashboards to monitor effectiveness and compliance posture
  • Chair governance forums, advisory boards, and working groups to align data and AI initiatives with organizational goals and risk appetite
  • Oversee the development, maintenance, and communication of data and AI governance policies, standards, and procedures
  • Evaluate governance processes and drive remediation and improvement initiatives where gaps are identified
  • Partner cross-functionally with business stakeholders, data leaders, technology, legal, compliance, audit, and risk teams
  • Monitor evolving data and AI regulatory requirements (e.g., global data protection and AI frameworks) and ensure ongoing compliance
  • Support the design and delivery of governance training and awareness programs across the organization
  • Contribute to leadership direction on responsible data and AI governance and its role in enabling business value

Essential skills and knowledge 

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in data and AI governance, risk management, audit, compliance, or assurance
  • Strong understanding of data and AI governance frameworks, controls, and regulatory requirements (e.g., data protection, AI regulations)
  • Experience operating within a First Line of Defense or similar governance/assurance model
  • Proven ability to lead governance forums and influence senior stakeholders across business and technology functions
  • Experience designing and managing metrics, reporting, and dashboards for governance or risk oversight
  • Demonstrated experience developing or assessing governance frameworks, policies, and standards
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to operate across all organizational levels
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a complex, fast-paced, highly regulated environment
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., data governance, AI, information management) preferred
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., data governance, privacy, AI governance) preferred
  • Experience in life sciences or other highly regulated industries is considered an asset
  • Strong interest in ethical and responsible use of data and AI
