Senior Specialist – SAP CO Modules (Cost Center Accounting, Internal Orders, Profit Center Accounting, Product Costing, COPA)

Track – Record to Report (R2R)

Summary Role:

The Senior Specialist for SAP Controlling (CO) Modules is responsible for designing, validating, and implementing cost management and performance measurement processes across the SAP landscape. This role ensures effective integration of controlling functions such as Cost Center Accounting, Profit Center Accounting, Internal Orders, Product Costing, and Profitability Analysis (COPA), aligned with business objectives and enterprise financial strategies. The specialist acts as a key advisor between the finance function, business stakeholders, and the system integrator (SI) team to ensure optimal use of SAP CO capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Analyze and document business requirements related to cost controlling, internal reporting, and profitability analysis.
  2. Drive and validate the solution design for SAP CO modules across key design areas: cost center hierarchy, internal orders, overhead planning, allocations, and cost object controlling.
  3. Align controlling structure with enterprise structure and chart of accounts; ensure consistent integration with FI and logistics modules (MM, SD, PP).
  4. Lead configuration reviews and validate system setups for CO modules to ensure accurate planning, allocations, and reporting.
  5. Review functional specifications for custom developments, especially for allocation cycles, planning layouts, and COPA enhancements.
  6. Support planning cycles, budgeting, forecasting models, and CO reporting frameworks.
  7. Collaborate with data migration teams to validate master data (cost centers, internal orders, activity types) and transactional data readiness.
  8. Participate in and support system integration testing, user acceptance testing (UAT), and defect resolution cycles.
  9. Evaluate and validate management reporting and profitability reporting requirements; ensure correct derivation logic in COPA.
  10. Conduct training sessions and prepare user documentation for CO-related functionalities.
  11. Provide post-go-live stabilization support and drive continuous improvements in controlling and reporting processes.

  • CO Business Requirement Document (BRD)
  • Review of Solution Design and Traceability Matrix
  • Review of Configuration and Functional Specification Documents
  • Allocation Cycle Designs (Cost Center → Cost Center, Cost Center → COPA, etc.)
  • COPA Derivation Rules and Value Field Mapping
  • Test Scripts and UAT Sign-off Reports
  • End-User Training Materials and Session Logs
  • Cutover Plans, Reconciliation Reports, and Hypercare Support Documentation

Essential skills and knowledge

Education & Experience Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Information Technology.
  2. Professional SAP certification in CO module preferred.
  3. 5-7 years of hands-on experience with SAP CO modules, including experience in ECC and/or S/4HANA.
  4. Strong knowledge in cost object controlling, activity-based costing, variance analysis, and profitability analysis.
  5. Exposure to planning tools like SAP BPC or SAC (optional but preferred).
  6. Proven experience in at least two end-to-end SAP implementations with deep involvement in CO design and configuration.
  7. Strong understanding of financial integration points and closing cycle activities.
  8. Excellent communication, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  9. Experience with Universal Journal and Account-Based COPA in S/4HANA is a strong plus.
