Introduction

The Process Automation Technician - Commissioning is responsible for supporting the installation verification, calibration, loop checking, testing, and commissioning of automation, instrumentation, and control systems.

The Process Automation Technician - Commissioning is responsible for supporting the installation verification, calibration, loop checking, testing, and commissioning of automation, instrumentation, and control systems. This role works closely with the commissioning team to ensure all automation systems and associated equipment are installed, tested, and functioning in accordance with Client specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements, enabling the safe and efficient start-up of the facility.

  • Verify the installation of field instrumentation, including:
    • Pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters
    • Control valves and on/off valves
    • Analyzers and instrumentation panels
  • Ensure installations comply with P&IDs, hook-up drawings, loop diagrams, and equipment datasheets.
  • Inspect cable connections, terminations, tagging, labeling, and installation quality.

2. Calibration & Configuration

  • Perform calibration of instrumentation using certified test equipment.
  • Configure and adjust transmitters, switches, and control valves in accordance with project specifications.
  • Maintain accurate calibration records and ensure instrument traceability.
  • Assist with the configuration of smart instrumentation, including HART and Foundation Fieldbus devices.
  • Perform loop checks from field devices through to PLC/DCS control systems.
  • Verify signal continuity, polarity, scaling, and functionality.
  • Support functional testing of:
    • Control loops
    • Interlocks and shutdown systems
    • Alarms and operator indications
  • Identify, report, and assist in resolving loop discrepancies.

4. Control Systems Support

  • Assist in the commissioning of:
    • Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
    • SCADA systems
  • Support I/O checks, control cabinet inspections, and signal verification.
  • Assist with integration between field devices and automation systems.
  • Assist with commissioning of:
    • Fire Detection Annunciator Systems (FDAS)
    • Security Access Control Systems (SACS)
  • Support cabinet inspections, CCTV verification, and system signal testing.
  • Assist with interface testing between integrated systems.

6. Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning Activities

  • Participate in pre-commissioning inspections and system readiness activities.
  • Support commissioning and start-up activities.
  • Verify instrumentation and automation systems are ready for plant start-up.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and implementing corrective actions during commissioning.
  • Complete and maintain:
    • Loop check sheets
    • Calibration reports
    • Test records and commissioning checklists
  • Report commissioning progress, deficiencies, and punch list items to the Automation Lead.
  • Assist in updating red-line drawings and as-built documentation.

8. Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

  • Comply with all Client HSE policies, procedures, and permit-to-work requirements, including LOTOTO.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow all site safety procedures.
  • Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and risk assessments.
  • Identify and document punch list items during inspections and testing.
  • Support the close-out of automation and instrumentation punch list items.
  • Assist with system turnover and completion documentation for handover to operations.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Technical Diploma or Certificate in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

  • 3-8 years of experience supporting instrumentation and automation commissioning activities.
  • Experience on EPC, mining, power generation, oil & gas, smelting, or other heavy industrial projects.
  • Hands-on experience with field instrumentation, PLC, DCS, and industrial control systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary commissioning team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and continuous improvement.
