Introduction

Brunel is seeking an experienced Ballast Cleaner / Mechanical Fitter to join a leading mining operation in the Pilbara region. This FIFO role offers the opportunity to work on specialised rail maintenance equipment, supporting critical rail infrastructure within a large-scale mining environment.

What are you going to do 

Brunel is currently recruiting for a Ballast Cleaner / Mechanical Fitter to support rail maintenance operations across the Pilbara region.

This position is offered on an 8 days on, 6 days off FIFO roster, working 12-hour shifts and involves maintaining specialised track maintenance machinery in both workshop and operational environments.

  • Operate, repair and maintain Ballast Cleaner and Spoil Wagon fleet equipment.
  • Conduct preventative and breakdown maintenance on specialised track machines.
  • Service and maintain Caterpillar and Deutz engines.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot and repair pneumatic systems, including train brake systems.
  • Complete conveyor belt installation, maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform hydraulic fault-finding and component replacements.
  • Undertake wear liner change-outs and light fabrication activities.
  • Carry out electrical diagnostics on 415V, 240V and 24V systems.
  • Assist with PLC diagnostics and repair activities.
  • Work safely and effectively within operational and workshop environments.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and reporting.
  • Contribute positively to team performance and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential skills and knowledge

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • Australian recognised Mechanical Fitter trade qualification.
  • Strong mechanical maintenance background.
  • Experience with Plasser track machinery.
  • Rail maintenance experience with sound knowledge of rail operations and practices.
  • Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices.
  • Current C Class Driver's Licence.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • HR Driver's Licence.
  • Forklift Licence.
  • Working at Heights certification.
  • National Rail Infrastructure qualifications.
  • Experience working on specialised rail maintenance equipment.
  • PLC diagnostic and troubleshooting experience.
