Introduction

The Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Technician - Commissioning is responsible for executing field activities related to the installation verification, calibration, loop checking, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems.

The Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Technician - Commissioning is responsible for executing field activities related to the installation verification, calibration, loop checking, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems.

This role supports the commissioning team by ensuring that all instrumentation, control systems, and associated equipment are installed, tested, and functioning in accordance with project specifications, Client standards, applicable industry codes, and operational requirements, enabling the safe and efficient start-up of the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Installation Verification

Verify the correct installation of field instrumentation, including:

Pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters

Control valves and on/off valves

Analyzers and instrumentation panels

Ensure installations comply with P&IDs, hook-up drawings, loop diagrams, datasheets, and Client standards.

Inspect cable routing, terminations, gland installations, tagging, and labeling.

Identify and report installation deficiencies for corrective action.

  1. Calibration & Configuration

Perform calibration of field instruments using certified calibration equipment.

Configure transmitters, switches, positioners, and control valves in accordance with project specifications.

Maintain calibration records and ensure full instrument traceability.

Assist with the configuration of smart instrumentation, including HART, Foundation Fieldbus, and other digital communication protocols.

  1. Loop Checking & Functional Testing

Perform loop checks between field devices and the Distributed Control System (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

Verify signal continuity, polarity, scaling, and instrument functionality.

Assist with functional testing of:

Control loops

Interlocks and shutdown systems

Alarms and indications

Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve loop discrepancies.

  1. Control Systems Support

Assist commissioning engineers with the commissioning of:

Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

SCADA systems

Responsibilities include:

Supporting I/O checks and cabinet inspections.

Verifying field signals and communications.

Assisting with the integration of field instrumentation into plant control systems.

Supporting troubleshooting during commissioning and start-up activities.

  1. Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning Activities

Participate in pre-commissioning inspections and readiness checks.

Support commissioning activities through system testing and verification.

Ensure instrumentation systems are fully prepared for plant start-up.

Assist in identifying and resolving instrumentation issues during commissioning.

  1. Documentation & Reporting

Complete and maintain commissioning documentation, including:

Loop check sheets

Calibration certificates and reports

Test records and commissioning checklists

Report progress, issues, and punch list items to the I&C Lead.

Assist with updating red-line drawings and as-built documentation.

Ensure all documentation meets Client QA/QC requirements.

  1. Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

Comply with all Client HSE policies and procedures, including Permit to Work (PTW), Lock Out/Tag Out/Try Out (LOTOTO), and safe work practices.

Wear appropriate PPE and follow established safety procedures during all field activities.

Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.

Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and risk assessments.

Promote a proactive safety culture across the commissioning team.

  1. Punch List & System Completion

Identify and document punch list items during inspections and testing.

Support the completion and close-out of instrumentation-related punch items.

Assist with system walkdowns, turnover packages, and final documentation.

Support the handover of completed systems from Commissioning to Operations.

Essential skills and knowledge

Qualifications

Education

Diploma or Technical Certificate in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

Equivalent industry experience (minimum three additional years in lieu of formal qualifications) will also be considered.

Experience

Minimum 3-8 years of experience in instrumentation, pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities.

Experience working on EPC or large industrial projects within mining, oil & gas, power generation, smelting, minerals processing, or heavy industrial facilities.

Hands-on experience with field instrumentation, industrial control systems, and commissioning activities.

Familiarity with DCS, PLC, SCADA, HART, and digital instrumentation systems is highly desirable.

Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Good communication and reporting skills.

Ability to work safely and efficiently under the demands of a commissioning environment.
