About this role


Lead the Lab activities in support of the commissioning of the Steam cracker plant, MTBE and But-1 unit and Pygas hydrotreating unit. Ensure that Lab facility, equipment, test methods, manpower and test consumables are ready to support plant commissioning and plant performance test run. Coordinate the technical training of staff assigned to handle the plant testing requirements. Guide the Lab to create a credible quality system and optimize the Lab testing activity during post commissioning period. The Team Leader- SCU is directly reporting to Superintendent Polymer SC Lab (LPIC Lab).


  • Lead role in the commissioning of SCU Lab designed to handle the testing requirement for the SCU and Utilities, MTBE & But-1, and Pygas hydrotreating unit;
  • Lead technical interaction with vendors related to equipment set-up and commissioning;
  • Evaluate, finalize and coordinate the setting up of the analytical methods needed for plant commissioning and normal run;
  • Review list of equipment and evaluate equipment performance using control samples or prepared standards;
  • Evaluate Lab facility with local and international HSE standard and work for improvement and compliance;
  • Initiate Lab Best Practices and good Standard operating procedure and HSE compliance procedure;
  • Coordinate SCU, MTBE-But-1, Pygas hydrotreating unit performance test run, optimization, product blend trials and lead in the resolution of complex problems;
  • Proposes product quality specification based on international quality standard and certifies product quality certificate;
  • Coordinate complex/non routine analytical work requested by stakeholders and review it for completeness, accuracy and conformance with established procedures;
  • Provide input for the optimum sampling and testing schedule;
  • Identifies and recommend opportunities/ideas or Quick Win impacting favorably on Lab operating expense, reliability of equipment, or resolving unit process issues or improvement in plant operation;
  • Participate in development, modification and improvement of analytical test methods;
  • Provide input in solving equipment problems, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance;
  • Provides input into budget preparation, optimize the use of consumables and justifies new equipment proposal;
  • Carries out the department strategy as implemented by the department manager;
  • Promotes a learning culture within the section, plans for staff development and regularly review and monitor staff performance;
  • Lead resolution of product quality issues or HSE related incident and issue report and recommendation for remedy and correction.

About you


  • Minimum Qualifications for this position is Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with at least 10 years working experience in Steam cracker plant, MTBE and But-1 unit and Pyrolysis gasoline (Pygas) hydrotreating unit, with minimum 5 years in supervisory role;
  • Has experience in grassroots project implementation related to oil and gas;
  • Well versed with official licensor and international standard methodology (ASTM, UOP, IP, IFP, SMS, ISO, APHA, etc.);
  • Good collaborative skills, fosters teamwork and good performance management skills;
  • Knowledge in the use of LIMS (particularly Labware) and SAP applications for data management and Equipment breakdown history;
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, technical writing and presentation skills;
  • Decisive, forward thinker, proactive, resourceful and strong self-initiative to handle new work processes;
  • Promoter of learning culture and staff development and familiar with different training programs and developmental opportunities;
  • Demonstrate Quality management skill and Time management skill;
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills and meticulous with data accuracy and precision;
  • Knowledgeable of Lab safety standards, HSE protocol, oil and gas plant safety rules and regulation;
  • Prime-mover in improving work processes and procedures within the department;
  • Skilled and very capable to handle operation and troubleshooting of Gas chromatographs, Spectroscopy, Elemental analyzers and Petroleum analyzers;
  • Familiar with critical equipment spare parts and consumables and ability to promote inventory thru LIMS;
  • Organize frequent brainstorming sessions and has extensive experience in dealing with RCA methodologies.
