Jobs in Western Australia

Western Australia enjoys a wealth of natural resources which, combined with its proximity to Asian markets, have enabled strong economic growth and benefits to both industry and community in recent years. Home to 10.4% of Australia’s population, Western Australia has the lowest unemployment rate in the country, with over a million workers. The state’s top five employing industries in 2021 are: health care and social assistance, education and training, construction, retail trade, and mining.

Mining is a particularly exciting industry in Western Australia, making the largest contribution to the Gross State Product (GSP) in 2019-20 (up 4.9%). Unlike the rest of Australia, a large proportion of the workforce are employed in the mining industry – around one in 10 workers. In fact, nearly 45% of all mining jobs across Australia are in this state. The oil and gas industry also plays a key role in driving the economy and generating jobs in Western Australia, as the country’s leading state for crude oil production. Workers are needed to support both onshore and offshore processing facilities and all stages of the oil and gas lifecycle, from exploration and appraisal to development and production. Both industries employ a large percentage of fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers, spreading economic benefits across the entire country.
